Ultrasound scan of the uterus (womb) of a menopausal woman. The menopause is a series of changes in hormone production that mark the end of female fertility. A decrease in the production of the hormone oestrogen by the ovaries causes a woman's menstrual periods to stop. This leads to the breakdown, or atrophy, of the lining (endometrium) of the uterus.
