Carthage; now a seaside suburb of Tunis (capital of Tunisia); is known for its ancient archaeological sites. Founded by the Phoenicians in the first millennium BC; it was once the seat of the powerful Carthaginian (Punic) Empire; which was defeated by Rome in the 2nd century BC.
