Mahmoud; C Smirke up. Mahmoud was the 1936 winner of the Derby. Owned and bred by HH The Aga Khan; he comes from the Blenheim-Mah Mahal stock and is the third grey horse to win this classic race. Trained by Frank Butters and ridden by C Smirke; he easily defeated the favourites and won in record time. Mahmouds success in the Derby was most gratifying to HH The Aga Khan; because all racing folk declared a grey could never "stay."
