Mahmoud; C Smirke up. Mahmoud was the 1936 winner of the Derby. Owned and bred by HH The Aga Khan; he comes from the Blenheim-Mah Mahal stock and is the third grey horse to win this classic race. Trained by Frank Butters and ridden by C Smirke; he easily defeated the favourites and won in record time. Mahmouds success in the Derby was most gratifying to HH The Aga Khan; because all racing folk declared a grey could never "stay." The Aga Khan always had belief in the breeding of the colt and this was justified by the record Mahmoud placed to his credit. Illustration for Photocard issued by Ardath Tobacco in c.1936.
