The last fight of the "Revenge." When Lord Thomas Howards squadron of seven ships was surprised at the Azores in 1591 by a Spanish fleet of fifty-three; his second-in-command; Sir Richard Grenville; in the Revenge; stayed to embark the sick who had been landed. He also hoped to out-manoeuvre the enemy; unable to do this he fought the whole Spanish fleet single-handed. Although the Revenge; reduced to a wreck; was finally compelled to surrender after sixteen hours fighting; with the gallant Sir Richard mortally wounded and at last forced below; she enabled the rest to escape.
