The mascot. The mascot which is carried on almost every motor-car to-day is the descendant of the ancient Charm or Talisman; which consisted of a figure in metal or stone carved or engraved when two planets were in conjunction; or when a star was at its culminating point; and was supposed to exert a protective influence over its wearer. Many British regiments and warships possess a pet animal as their Mascot; indeed; in varying forms the mascot has persisted among all nations throughout the world from time immemorial. Illustration for one of a set of 25 cigarette cards on the subject of Popular Superstitions issued by Godfrey Phillips in 1930.
