Why "Piccadilly"? To find the reason for this name it is necessary to go back to the age of elegance; when spruce coxcombs puffed out their fine clothes with rags and bran; and had looking glasses set in their tobacco boxes. Both women and men wore the piccadil; or pickadell; and these fineries - described as mists of white linen - brought a fortune to a tailor; Mr Higgins. The establishment he caused to be built on the north-west corner of the Haymarket; London; was called Piccadilly Hall; and the street known all over the civilized world derives its name from this house. Illustration for one of a set of 50 "Do You Know?" cigarette cards issued by Carreras in 1939.
