Light micrograph of atherosclerotic plaque in a coronary artery wall. Atherosclerosis narrows the lumens of arteries that may lead to decreased blood flow to organs. In this case, a coronary artery, one of the arteries supplying the heart muscle, shows atherosclerotic plaque buildup. The plaque consists of cholesterol material (white to light-gray) in addition to calcification (dark purple spots), and fibrous tissue (wispy pink strands). The normal portion of the artery wall (straight dark pink band) is present at the very bottom of the image. Haematoxylin and eosin stained tissue section. Magnification: 100x when printed at 10 centimetres.
