Illustration of the lunar mountain range Montes Apenninus. It was named by Johannes Hevelius after the Apennine Mountains in Italy. The range is believed to have formed 3.9 billion years ago. Montes Apenninus forms the southeastern border of the Mare Imbrium, a vast lava plain within the Imbrium Basin.
