El Nino impact on crop yield during the period 2023-2024. El Nino is a natural climate phenomenon characterised by warmer-than-normal sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. It disrupts rainfall patterns across the planet and is projected to affect crop yields, leaving 110 million people in need of food assistance. The map illustrates the projected impact of El Nino on key commodity crops such as wheat, maize (corn), rice, soybean, and sorghum. El Niño is likely to result in poor maize yields in southern Africa and Central America due to drought, while wheat yields in Australia and rice yields in Southeast Asia are also expected to be reduced. Map is based on the analysis of historical crop yields and climate data from 1961 to 2020.
