Annihilation of the Greek Army; 811. During the reign of the warlike ruler Krum (802-815); Bulgaria was invaded by the Byzantine emperor Nicephorus. Krum blockaded the passes of the Balkans; and when the Greek army was returning home it was surrounded and annihilated by the Bulgarians. No prisoners were taken; and Nicephorus himself was killed and his skull made into a goblet. Illustration for Hutchinson's History of the Nations (Hutchinson; c.1920).
