Job Charnock founding Calcutta; 1690. In 1686 the noted factor; Job Charnock; fixed upon the site of Calcutta (Satanati) and built a wattle and daub factory on the banks of the Hugli; from which he had to flee on account of troubles between the British and native authorities. He went to Madras until these were over. In 1690 he returned to Bengal; and with an armed party proceeded to Satanati and scrambled up the mud bank in the rains; to find only the remains of a burnt hut; out of which eventually grew the great capital of Calcutta. Illustration for Hutchinson's History of the Nations (Hutchinson; c.1920). Note: Image has been digitally enhanced to facilitate repro.
