The Gutians capturing a Babylonian City. About 2575 BC a confederation of Semitic tribes from Guti descended upon the Babylonian plain. After a severe struggle they overcame their more civilized kindred; the Akkadians; as well as the Sumerians in the south; and dominated the country for many years. Akkadian troops are here seen making a stand outside their strongly fortified city; which has fallen by assault. Illustration for Hutchinson's History of the Nations (Hutchinson; c.1920).
