State Entry of Cyrus into Babylon. On his arrival at Babylon Cyrus was welcomed by the people and their priests as a liberator; and he secured their permanent good-will by restoring the ancient ritual which Nabonidus had abolished. He is here seen riding at the head of his army along the Sacred Way of Babylon to visit the temple of Marduk. He has just passed beneath the Ishtar Gate; its flanking towers decorated with rows of bulls and dragons in relief. Illustration for Hutchinson's History of the Nations (Hutchinson; c.1920).
