Croesus led before Cyrus on the Capture of Sardis. When Cyrus had defeated Astyages and had made himself master of the Median empire; Croesus of Lydia; relying upon help from Babylon and Egypt; marched across the Halys to oppose him. After the battle of Pteria in 547 BC; Croesus retreated to Sardis; which was captured by the Persians in the following year. Croesus on his submission was received favourably by Cyrus; who banished him to Persia. Illustration for Hutchinson's History of the Nations (Hutchinson; c.1920).
