The Sea! The Sea! The heroic way in which ten thousand Greek soldiers; left leaderless in the heart of the Medo-Persian Empire; made their way to the coast and so home; is graphically told by the historian Xenophon; to whose vigour and decision their success was largely due. He gives us a moving description of their first distant view of the sea; which; although still fifty miles away; greatly stimulated their hopes of a safe return. Illustration for Hutchinson's History of the Nations (Hutchinson; c.1920). Note: Image has been digitally enhanced to facilitate repro.
