Frankish Knights building a Castle. During the thirteenth century the Frankish "crusaders" occupied Boetia and most of Greece; and adorned it with their castles; ruins of which are still to be seen. It was to the de la Roches and de Briennes of Athens that we owe the familiarity of the title "Duke of Athens" down to Shakespeare's days. The castles were probably built by means of a heavy corvee on the natives. Illustration for Hutchinson's History of the Nations (Hutchinson; c.1920).
