Title page from De Humani Corporis Fabrica (On the Structure of the Human Body) by Andreas Vesalius (1514-1564), Belgian physician and anatomist. This was the first accurate book on human anatomy, produced while Vesalius was Professor of Surgery and Anatomy at the University of Padua, Italy. The plate shows Vesalius (centre left) conducting a dissection in public. Vesalius left research soon after and became court physician to Charles V and later his son Phillip II of Spain.
