Blenkinsops rack locomotive, illustration. John Blenkinsop (1783-1831) was an English mining engineer and an inventor of steam locomotives, who designed the first practical railway locomotive. From Pioneer Locomotives in England and America by Alfred Mathews in The Engineering Magazine Volume XII, October 1896 to March 1897.
