Varicose eczema on the ankle of a 87 year old male patient. Varicose eczema, also known as venous eczema, is a long-term, inflammatory skin condition that affects the lower legs. It is caused by increased pressure in the leg veins, which then causes damage to the overlying skin. The affected skin often changes colour, which varies depending on the skin tone. It also becomes itchy, swollen, dry, and scaly. Varicose eczema is more common in older adults, women, and people who have varicose veins. If it is not treated, leg ulcers can develop. Treatment typically involves measures to improve circulation, moisturisers, steroids and compression stockings.
