In Greek mythology, Memnon fought for the Trojans. After he killed Antilochus, a friend of the Greek hero Achiles, Achilles fought him in battle. Zeus (here to the right) and the messenger god Hermes (to the left) weighed the fate of the two warriors (their life-size figures on the scale) to see which would die in the combat. The fate of Memnon sank, and so he was killed. This painting decorated an ancient Greek vase.
