These illustrations of ancient Roman hairstytles date to 1897. They represent; from left to right; top to bottom: Octavia; Messalina (wife of Claudius); Sabina (wife of Hadrian); and Plautilla (wife of Caracalla). The bust of Octavia is in the Capitoline museum in Rome. The busts of the other three are in the British Museum in London. Octavia was the sister of the first Roman emperor; Augustus (ruled 27 B.C. to 14 A.D.); and the fourth wife of Mark Antony. Claudius was emperor of Rome from 41 to 54 a.D.; Hadrian was Roman emperor from 117 to 138 a.D. Caracalla was Roman emperor from 198 to 217 A.D.
