Confocal light micrograph of ant (family Formicidae) brain structures including the antennal lobes, mushroom bodies, optic lobes and central complex. Mushroom bodies are a pair of structures in the brain of insects that play a role in olfactory (smell) learning and memory. Synapsin, a presynaptic protein, has been labelled and the different colours reflect the changing depths of the structures as they extend through the whole brain.
