Confocal light micrograph of mushroom bodies in the brain of an ant (family Formicidae). Mushroom bodies are a pair of structures in the brain of insects that play a role in olfactory (smell) learning and memory. Synapsin, a presynaptic protein, has been labelled and the different colours reflect the changing depths of the mushroom bodies as they extend through the whole brain.
