Illustration of the Italian-US astronomer Riccardo Giacconi (1931-2018). Giacconi pioneered X-ray astronomy and was awarded the 2002 Nobel Prize in Physics for this work. From 1981, he was the first director of the Space Telescope Science Institute (operating the Hubble Space Telescope, HST). From 1993-9 he was director of the European Southern Observatory (ESO), working on the Very Large Telescope (VLT).
