Illustration of the US astrophysicist and cosmologist George Smoot (born 1945). Smoot shared the 2006 Nobel Prize in Physics with John C Mather for the discovery of the black body form and anisotropy of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), the radiation left over from the Big Bang. This discovery was announced in 1992 using data from the COBE satellite.
