Jupiters moon Europa imaged by the solid state imaging instrument on NASAs Galileo spacecraft. Europa is composed mostly of silicate rock with a surface coated in water ice. Scientists believe a vast saltwater ocean may lie beneath this crust. The crust is cracked and ridged, with regions of disrupted terrain where the ice has been broken up and re-frozen into new patterns. The different colours of the surface are associated with differences in composition and geology. Areas that appear blue/white contain relatively pure water ice, whereas red/brown areas contain higher concentrations of compounds other than water. This image was obtained on 26 September 1998. It was then combined with lower-resolution colour data from a separate flyby.
