The 64m parabolic antenna of the Parkes Radio Telescope, New South Wales, Australia. The telescope was completed in 1961 and, apart from identifying the first quasar, 3C273, is famous for its role in the Apollo lunar programme, receiving the first TV signals from the Moon in July 1969. It also featured in the film The Dish. The image shows the control tower on which the fully steerable dish is mounted, the parabolic antenna and the focus cabin above. The curved mass at lower left is a counterweight for the dish. The antenna surface has a solid steel plate at its centre (not visible in this image) surrounded by a perforated aluminium panel and a galvanised steel mesh at the periphery.
