Sikhote-Alin meteorite fragment. The Sikhote-Alin meteorite fell to Earth from space in northern Siberia on the morning of 12 February 1947. This iron meteorite caused a fireball in the north, leaving a trail of smoke and dust in the atmosphere for many kilometres as it disintegrated. The fragments were scattered over a large area, with some creating small craters upon impact. This event was one of the few witnessed iron meteorite falls and considered one of the most spectacular. This fragment measures around 15 centimetres in length and weighs 1,800 grams.
