American dog tick (Dermacentor variabilis) on a persons toe. These ticks can carry various bacterial species which cause disease in humans. Their saliva also contains a toxin which can cause tick paralysis. This is a form of paralysis which develops from the legs upwards and can be fatal, but should resolve once the tick is removed. Tick paralysis rarely affects humans, and is more often seen in domestic animals and livestock.
