Asa Gray (1810-1888) American botanist; in the herbarium of the Harvard University Botanic Garden. The Herbarium was based on Grays collection of more than 200;000 specimens which he offered to the Botanic Garden in 1862 on the condition that his collection; and his library of 2;200 botanical books; were housed in a fireproof building.
