Les Mourres de Forcalquier. The rocks that make up todays Mourres were formed in a lacustrine environment around 25 million years ago. They are thought to have originated from the stabilization of limestone sediment by seagrass beds. More recently, differential erosion has uncovered edifices consolidated by algal constructions. The spectacular basin-like shapes are thought to have resulted from the necrosis of the central part of the algal islets as they grew vertically and laterally. France
