Lichens in the Luberon. Lichens (Evernia prunastri) cover low branches on a shady, damp Luberon hillside. A perfume base (antioxidant fixative) is extracted from this locally common lichen, giving a rather masculine woody note ("chypres" perfumes). This lichen is also used in air quality biomonitoring for its bioaccumulative properties of heavy metals and radioelements. France
