Researcher watching footage of a Eurasian blue tit (Cyanistes caeruleus) in flight. The birds enclosure has samples from two oak trees: one infested with caterpillars and one with no caterpillars. The scientist is watching to see whether the blue tit preferentially flies to either one. The study found that the blue tit did fly to the infested tree sample more often, suggesting that the tree can chemically attract birds as a way of defending itself from herbivory.
