The Salih Bazaar Palace, Constantinople, lately occupied by the Prince and Princess of Wales, 1869. The Salih Bazaar Palace, which had been prepared for [the future King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra], stands on the north side of the Bosphorus, at Tophaneh, and looks right over to Scutari. In the view given by our Artist we are looking up the Bosphorus, and the Sultans own palace is seen in the distance. The Salih Bazaar Palace has been the residence of Ilhami Pacha and Mehemet Ali Pacha. It was now fitted up in a very splendid style for the reception of its illustrious visitors. The Gobelins carpets and Damascus silks were the finest that could be procured for the occasion; every European luxury was provided; and various domestic comforts, not ordinarily supplied in Turkey, were well looked to here. The lattice-work which is placed on the windows - as usual in Turkish dwellings - to screen the fair inmates from the rude gaze of outsiders, was removed, and the windows all richly hung in magnificent silk hangings. A superb piano occupied a place in the grand saloon, the furniture was of Parisian make...All the servants were Greeks and Europeans, except that the coachmen were French, and the steward was an English subject.
