The British Expedition to Abyssinia: front view of the Church of Miriam, at Focada, 1868. Miriam is the word generally used in the East for Mary, and many of the churches in this country are dedicated to her...All the churches here are founded on the arrangement of the Tabernacle and the Temple, with three divisions or courts. The church at Focada [in Ethiopia] has an inclosure or Temnos, with some old trees in it forming a grove. In the drawing of the front will be seen the stones hanging by strings, which are used as bells. The two doors lead into the outer court, called the Kunyaymalt. The door leading into the second court may be seen in the inside. From "Illustrated London News", 1868.
