The Beaufort Cup for the Bath Races, 1868. The Beaufort Cup, manufactured by Messrs. Garrard for the Bath races, is a vase, designed by Mr. W. Spencer, in the Renaissance style. It has two side bas-reliefs, which represent, one, the coronation of King Henry VI., by Cardinal Beaufort (a son of John of Gaunt and grandson of Edward III.), in the cathedral of Notre Dame at Paris; and, the other, the actions of Henry Beaufort, fifth Earl and first Marquis of Worcester, who fought on the side of King Charles II, at the Battle of Worcester. The base is adorned with equestrian statuettes of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, and of his descendant in the fifteenth century, Henry Beaufort, Duke of Somerset; and with other statuettes, that of Cardinal Beaufort, and that of Margaret Beaufort, Countess of Richmond, the mother of King Henry VII.
