Lighthouse on Kennery Island, near Bombay, [India], 1868. Lighthouse warning ships of dangerous reefs, designed by Swan, Musgrave, and Ellison, civil engineers and contractors...On each side of the tower a building is erected...There is a verandah in front the whole length, and on the ground floor the rooms are appropriated for stores...The upper portion contains accommodation for eight lascars on one side, and officers quarters on the other, with a verandah in front and back to both wings. The front verandah is supported on pillars and arches, and the back verandah on teak posts. Ample accommodation is provided for the officer and men in charge...The lighthouse tower is 50 ft. above the level of the ground, and gives an elevation for the focal plane of the light 161 ft, above the mean level of the sea. The lighting apparatus is supplied by Messrs. Wilkins and Co., of London, and consists of a holophotal cata-dioptric light apparatus of the first order. By its showing only towards the sea from the most westerly points of dangers in the Bombay harbour and the coast, its powers are concentrated and increased...[This lighthouse] will contribute, in a most important degree, to the safety of the navigation into and out of the harbour of Bombay.
