Ladies Cup, Athletic Sports, Kings College School, 1869. The pupils of Kings College School held then fourth annual meeting for athletic sports, on Saturday week, at the Lillie-bridge ground, West Brompton [in London]. The weather being fine, there was a numerous and fashionable company of spectators, and they were enlivened with music by the band of the 1st Life Guards. The sports were managed by a committee of gentlemen, with Mr. A. M. Bremner for judge, Mr. W. E. Williken for starter, and Mr. W. F. Eaton for referee. The programme consisted of running races of 100 yards, 250 yards, 440 yards, and 880 yards, and one mile, over a flat course; a two-mile walking-race, two hurdle-races, a long jump, a high jump, and a "three-legged race," in pairs, each pair being tied together, so that the right leg of one and the left leg of the other move as a single limb for the couple of bodies. Our Illustration represents the best prize, which was the Ladies Cup, designed and manufactured for this occasion by Messrs. Elkington. From "Illustrated London News", 1869.
