Researchers testing the yield of a sugarcane (Saccharum sp.) strain developed to increase biomass. The left researcher is transferring sugarcane juice whilst the researcher on the right mills sugarcane to produce more. Sugarcane juice can be converted to ethanol, which can be used as a more sustainable fuel alternative. Here, researchers are developing sugarcane to maximise fibre content and resistance to cold and disease so that a large quantity can be grown in a range of climates.
