Researcher cutting the stem of a test strain of sugarcane (Saccharum sp.) for weighing as part of a project to maximise the biomass yield to increase biofuel production efficiency. Sugarcane juice can be converted to ethanol, which can be used as a more sustainable fuel alternative. At this farm, researchers are developing sugarcane to maximise fibre content and resistance to cold and disease so that a large quantity can be grown in a range of climates. Photographed in Houma, Louisiana, USA.
