Farmers harvesting test strains of sugarcane (Saccharum sp.) as part of a project to maximise the biomass yield to increase biofuel production efficiency. Sugarcane juice can be converted to ethanol, which can be used as a more sustainable fuel alternative. At this farm, researchers cross-breed sugarcane to maximise fibre content and resistance to cold and disease so that a large quantity can be grown in a range of climates. Photographed near Houma, Louisiana, USA.
