Wreckage of the USS Monitor, an ironclad ship used by the Union in the US civil war. The Monitor sank off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, during a storm on 31st December 1862. The wreckage was discovered in 1973 and the wreck site became the first US national marine sanctuary in 1975. A national marine sanctuary is a protected marine habitat.
