Deep sea coral mound formed from Lophelia pertusa coral. This species grows in water between 4-12 degrees Celsius typically at depths between 200-1000 metres. Deep sea corals lack the symbiotic algae which most shallow corals rely upon, and grow at a slower rate. When these corals die their calcium carbonate exoskeletons (brown/grey) remain, and new corals (white) grow on top of them. Over time this forms mounds of coral which have been found to reach around 90 metres in height. These mounds provide shelter and food for many other organisms. Filmed in million mounds coral region, off the coast of Florida and Georgia, USA. This is a near-continuous are of coral mounds spanning around 55,000 square kilometres.
