Polarised light micrograph of the tracheae and tracheoles in a damselfly larva caudal gill. Damselflies are close relatives of dragonflies. The caudal gills are found on the tip of the abdomen. They allow the larvae to extract oxygen from the water. Magnification: x372 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
