This is one of the oldest of the metropolitan [ie London] corps, having been formed in 1839...The establishment of the 1st Surrey consists of eight compares, commanded by Lieutenant-Colonel J. H. Macdonald, formerly Lieutenant-Colonel in the Bengal Artillery; its hon. Colonel being that distinguished Indian veteran General Sir George Pollock, G.C.B., K.S.I. The Adjutant of the corps is Captain Freeman, formerly Captain in the 16th Foot; while its drill instructors have all served in that gallant body the 60th Rifles...Several of the officers of the corps may be recognised in our Engraving. Colonel Macdonald is seated at one end of the table, while Mr. Harrison Weir, the Assistant-Quartermaster, leans over a map or drawing, at the other hand.
