Illustration of the Dutch chemist Bernard Feringa (born 1951). Feringa is best know for his work on molecular machines, small organic molecules that move in response to a stimulus. In the 1990s Feringa and colleagues synthesised the first monodirectional molecular rotary motor, which was powered by light. In 2011 his research group created a nanocar, a molecule with a chassis and four molecular motors for wheels, that when stimulated by an electric current could move across a surface. Feringa received a share of the 2016 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on molecular machines along with Jean-Pierre Sauvage and J Fraser Stoddart.
