Illustration of the Israeli biochemist Ada Yonath (born 1939). Yonath is best known for her work using X-ray crystallography to determine the the structure of ribosomes. Ribosomes are complex molecules composed of protein and RNA (ribonucleic acid) and are the site of protein synthesis. Yonath shared the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Thomas Steitz and Venkatraman Ramakrishnan for her work.
