Flowers on a bamboo (Bambusa sp.) plant. Bamboo forests flower simultaneously, in a phenomenon known as gregarious flowering. This happens roughly every 40-80 years depending on the bamboo species. Once the flowering has finished, the bamboo forest dies, to be replaced by the new seedlings.
