St Bartholomew. Plate 5. From: Christ and the Apostles, c.1545. This is one of the most vivid prints in the series: apprehension is evident in Bartholomews pose - has he detected an enemy or vice versa? In his left hand, he carries a large knife: this alludes to his grisly martyrdom, in which he was skinned alive.
