Luthers chapel at Wartburg Castle, 1862. View of ...the chapel in which the great reformer preached...Luther, besides completing a large portion of his translation of the Bible in his asylum at Wartburg, wrote here several treatises against auricular confession, monastic vows, clerical celibacy, and prayers for the dead, against the Sorbonne of Paris, which had condemned his works, and which he exposed to public ridicule. For nearly a whole year he by turns instructed, exhorted, reproved, and thundered from this mountain retreat, and the beloved voice of the Reformer was everywhere hailed with enthusiasm.
